Materials & specification
Our MLSS-268 custom sculpture lists 304/316 stainless steel options. The selected grade is part of the project specification; it is not safe to assume every product in this broad collection uses the same material.
An option to discuss for indoor and inland outdoor settings. Tell us about moisture, nearby pools, cleaning products and local exposure before the grade is selected.
An option to discuss where coastal or chloride exposure is relevant. A 316 specification does not remove the need for suitable fabrication, drainage and maintenance.
Ask the quotation to state the exact steel designation, sheet specification, internal frame, base plate and fixings. If material certificates or a particular grade such as 316L are required, raise this before ordering so availability and documentation can be confirmed.
Water-feature designs also need the proposed water chemistry, treatment and circulation conditions reviewed. The sculpture grade and the pump, pipework and electrical scope should be specified separately.
Our fabrication process shows stainless steel sheets being formed and welded, followed by grinding and surface finishing. For a mirror-finished design, discuss weld blending, continuity of reflections and the finish sample before approval.
Ask for close-up photographs of curved areas, panel joins and the underside or base. Large works may need transport joints or site assembly; agree which joints remain visible.
Some designs deliberately retain fabrication texture. The MLSS-268 Brutalist product describes visible welding traces and rivets as part of its appearance. That effect should not be confused with a smooth mirror specification.
Required welding methods, structural weld checks and inspection documents depend on the commission. Confirm them in the specification; do not assume an invisible weld or a particular inspection standard is included with every product.

A gold appearance is a finish choice; it is not a steel grade. Mirror polishing describes the surface and does not, by itself, identify 304 or 316.
Share sketches, reference images, overall dimensions and a site photograph. Agree the form, finish direction and base before production.
Confirm the steel and frame specification, panel and joint plan, finish sample and progress-photo approval points.
Agree transport sections, packing, lifting points, base and anchor coordination. Local site preparation and installation responsibilities need a written scope.
For public or large installations, the structural design and site-specific requirements should be reviewed with the responsible local professional before fabrication is finalised.
Ask for a written breakdown of the sculpture, framework/base, finish, packing and freight. Confirm whether insurance, customs charges, taxes, unloading, crane hire, foundations and installation are included or excluded.
The production and delivery schedule depends on the actual design, approvals and route; it should be confirmed with the quotation.

Both grades are listed options for selected custom work. Tell us the exposure conditions and documentation requirements, then confirm the exact grade and applicable components in the written order specification.
Weld appearance varies with the design and finish. Blended reflective surfaces, visible industrial textures and transport joints need different approvals. Request close-ups and a finish sample rather than assuming every design is seamless.
Published options include mirror polished, brushed, sandblasted or matte, painted and plated/custom metallic effects. Ask which process is suitable for your chosen form, size and environment, and approve a sample before production.
Check the individual quotation. The sculpture, reservoir, pumps, nozzles, controls, pipework, electrical work and commissioning may have separate supply and installation responsibilities.
Size, shape, steel specification, weld and finish requirements, framework, integrated features and shipment scope all affect the price. Shortlist a design and request an itemised delivered quotation instead of applying one price range to the whole collection.
Follow the care instructions for the agreed finish and exposure. Painted or plated surfaces may need different care from bare polished steel. Avoid assuming stainless steel is maintenance-free; see our linked cleaning guide for a starting point.
